Anyone remember Mr. Coffey?

I remember him from very early days at St. Michael's.  He carried a burlap sack and had his private spot at the first pew in church where he would sit and eat saltine crackers (can't remember anyone daring to get to close to that).  Does anyone know the REAL story behind him?  I was talking with John Owens the other day and he also remembered many stories about him but we don't know if any were true or accurate.

From what I heard,  he owned the land the church and school were built on and donated the land to the church.  He always sat in the last pew of the church when you came in the front door. The kneeler was always destroyed and the  area smelled  terrible. If the church was packed on Sunday, you would get stuck sitting next to him.  It was  quite unpleasant. I heard he lived in a shack in the wood, but not sure if that's was true.   Maureen Hamilton
