Steve played the bassoon in the AHS Symphonic Band and he played it well in spite of his illness (I think kidney problems). He passed at the end of our senior year from complications of his illness. I doubt many of our classmates knew Steve because he was hospitalized often due to his illness, but he loved life and loved playing the bassoon in the band...when he was able.
Even though many may not remember him, he was a good person and enjoyed all he could of his very short life.
I remember Steve quite well. I think we almost blew up chemistry class one day. Steve was a real sweetie, very quick & witty. His glasses were always smudged, his lips blue-tinged, undoubtedly (in retrospect) due to insufficient oxygenation. It is my recollection that he died on the operating table during open heart surgery. I went to his memorial service--I remember being quite distressed because I didn't own black clothing and I didn't want to be disrespectful. He (affectionately, teasingly) called me "Tugboat Connie" because of my size nine feet (gimme a break! I was 5'10"!!) His humor and upbeat demeanor masked his medical issues. Too sad to have lost him so young. Connie Menefee

If you have a photo of Steve that we could use would you kindly forward it to 1971grad@gmail.com.
Thank you,

I also remeber Steve as a very kind and gentle person. I guess I didn't know him well enough because I was unaware of his illness.
What a waste.
