ROBERT ALAN TROTTER of Annandale, VA passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2008. Born December 25, 1952 at Fort Belvoir, VA. He is survived by his father, Alan E. Trotter of Fredericksburg, VA; his brothers, Thomas W. Trotter of Centreville, VA; Ronald E. Trotter (Betty and children, Moriah and Joshua) of Burke, VA; his aunt, Peggy Trotter of Annandale, VA; and other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his mother Ellen H. (Baxter) Trotter.

Bob passed away as a result of a heart attack.  He was a quiet, kind, gentle soul who loved music.  I remember he told me he wanted to compose music for a career.  His hero and favorite composer in high school was Schubert.  He actually carried the Schubert music sheets around with him.  I lost track of Bob over the years, but I always remember his quirky sense of humor and his kind words to me at Annandale High.

Bob was a fascinating person.  He had a dry, clever wit, and he was great fun to hang out with.  Like many of us, music became a defining passion for him.  Unlike most of us, his passion was not for the contemporary music of our high school years.  Bob's passion was for the music of German romantic composers of the early nineteenth century, in particular, Schumann and Schubert.  He had a grand piano in his home, and he practiced diligently, maybe even obsessively, to master the music he loved.  I don't think I ever heard him play, and I don't know if he ever performed his music for an audience.  I don't think that's what he was after; rather, I think his aim was to get so far inside the music that he could achieve that point of transcendence where he could understand and share what the composer intended to convey.  I hope he got there.
