Eugene H. Breitenberg, 79, a retired Army captain who taught history and government at Annandale High School from 1963 until 1975, died of pneumonia Dec. 5 at the Fairfax Nursing Center. He had Parkinson's disease.

He joined the Army as a private in 1943 and was later commissioned. He was a combat veteran of the Korean War and of World War II, during which he fought in Europe. In 1960, he served as an Army liaison to the Civil War Centennial Commission and was assigned to the Military District of Washington when he retired from active duty in 1963.

Mr. Breitenberg, who had lived in the Washington area since 1960, was a native of Hot Springs, Ark. He was a graduate of Colorado College and received a master's degree in history from Henderson University in Arkansas. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Springfield.
